ABCs of Travel Tag

A) Age you went on your first international trip:
I went to Mexico with my Mom when I was 23 - bit of a late bloomer when it came to getting the travel bug - but I think I have more than made it for it ever since.

B) Best foreign beer you've had and where:
Hofbräuhaus in Munich - I had the Hofbräu Original 1L. Also try their pork knuckle!

C) Cuisine (favourite):

Greek for sure!!! But I also really love Italian, so it is a very close second for me!

D) Destinations--favourite, least favourite, and why?:
Most favourite: London, UK - perhaps because I also lived there for 2 years - but I just fell in love with the city! I will never get sick of London!
Least favourite: Bucharest, Romania - Mostly because I felt I had seen everything worth seeing in the morning of the first day - there's not much to see or do and its fairly run down. I did however love Transylvania.

E) Event you've experienced abroad that made you say "wow":
So many, that's the greatest thing about traveling is when you have the "wow" moment.
- Looking down after climbing the Great Wall of China
- Seeing Fireworks over Sydney Harbor for Australia Day
- Watching the sunrise from a Hot air Balloon in Cappadocia Turkey
- Watching the sunset in Oia Santorini Greece
- Seeing Time Square for the first time in NYC
- Great Barrier Reef
- Fjords in Norway
- Seeing Tower Bridge and Big Ben for the first time in London
- So many more!

F) Favorite mode of transportation:
Probably Train - because it is generally the smoothest and you have room to get up and walk around. I also don't mind ferries.

G) Greatest feeling while traveling:
As soon as I step foot into a new city or country I just feel overwhelmed with happiness. It is just so exciting to know that you are somewhere where everything will be brand new - you will be seeing it all for the first time.

H) Hottest place you've ever traveled to:
It was crazy hot when I was in Bucharest, Romania - I think they were having a heat wave - I had to buy a hand fan and they had street water misters to walk under.

I) Incredible service you've experienced and where?:
Hummm... nothing comes to mind because I am more of a budget traveler. I have definitely come across really nice and helpful desk staff at hotels and hostels but I cant say anywhere that's had incredible service.

J) Journey that took the longest:
My trip to Australia: Totaled close to 24 hours and that's without the time change.
Toronto to Vancouver - 5 hour flight
Vancouver to Sydney - 15.5 hour flight

Sydney to Brisbane - 1.5 hours flight
Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast - 1 hour + bus ride

K) Keepsake from your travels:
Usually a painting or print - but sometimes a household item or something that the place is famous for making (for instance I bought a lamp in Turkey).

L) Let-down sight, where and why?:
Paris in some ways - I think I just built it up too much in my head and then when I got there it was quite dirty and busy and people aren't very friendly. That being said I still felt butterfly moments especially when I saw the Eiffel tower light up at night.

M) Moment where you fell in love with traveling:
My first International trip to Mexico I was hooked. That same year I also traveled to China. It went from zero to full speed ahead and haven't stopped ever since.

N) Nicest hotel you've stayed in:
As I mentioned earlier I'm quite the no frills traveler - a hotel is just a place to sleep and it usually has little to no meaning in my memories of a country. So what is impressive to me might be less impressive to others, but I loved the resort I stayed at in Mexico called Catalonia Mayan Rivera.

O) Obsession--what are you obsessed with taking pictures of while traveling?:
Any wildlife or animals. I love animals so if I see any while traveling I go a bit crazy. Koalas and kangaroos in Australia were definite highlights but even the ducks and swans in London took up quite a bit of memory on my SD card.

P) Passport stamps-how many and from where?:
43 - but some are the same country; as I have re-entered or revisited. And then there's some countries that I haven't gotten stamps from based on how or where I entered.
Some of the stamps include:
Mexico, Australia, China, Hong Kong, London, Turkey, Ireland, Romania, Norway, Germany, Spain and more around Europe.

Q) Quirkiest attraction you've visited and where?:
I'm not quite sure if it counts as an attraction - but the Duck Village in Malta was definitely one of the quirkiest things I have ever seen.

R) Really Frightening: where's one place you've visited where you felt unsafe or uneasy?
I felt frightened at times in China - we got followed in a shopping area, and I got stared at a lot. Also in some of the markets they were quite aggressive and would grab my arm and pull me into their stall area. It never got to the point where I was upset from it - and it didn't have any effect on my overall time.

S) Splurge-something you have no problem spending money on while traveling:
Direct flights - I rarely have cheaped out on flights with layovers. The direct is usually only a little more and worth every penny. That being said if I only have carry-on luggage I don't mind layover flights as much.

T) Touristy thing you've done:
I probably do most of the touristy things in every city - they are touristy for a reason. They are usually special or unique to a specific place and that's why you go there. Hummm okay I got it... this is a bit of a silly thing but my friend Jess fake proposed to me on top of the Eiffel tower with her bracelet - quite memorable lol.

U) Unforgettable travel memory:
Moving countries is always an unforgettable experience as its just so life changing, so either my first day in Australia or my first day in London. They both felt overwhelming yet exciting.

V) Visas-how many and for where?:
Australia -1 year study visa
London - 2 year work visa
China - tourist visa
Turkey - tourist visa

W) Wine--best glass while traveling:
I do love to drink wine but I am in no where near enough of a wine expert to specify where one was better than another. My best experiences drinking wine abroad are in London, and in Turkey.

X) eXcellent view and from where?:
My view from the hot air balloon in Cappadocia Turkey, from up top of the Great Wall of China and through my goggles when snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Y) Years spent traveling: Internationally only since 2009 - so only 5-6 years.

Z) Zealous sports fans and where?:
I cant say Ive ever experienced any Sporting events that were above and beyond. I was in London during the setting up of the Summer Olympics and that was a bit crazy, but I was traveling during the actual games.

I found this tag on Casey's: We took the Road Less Traveled Blog! I loved reading all of her answers and hopefully more people will continue this tag. If you do please post me a link below so I can take a look :)
