Favourite European Castles

Today's post is on some of my favourite Castles/Palaces/Fortresses in Europe. Although pretty much every single one that you visit is amazing in its on way - these are some of my favourites that I have visited thus far!

Bran Castle, Romania

- Also known as Dracula's Castle
- In 1920 the castle became a royal residence for Queen Marie
- During WW2 the castle was used as a hospital

Topkapı Palace, Turkey

- Residence of the Ottoman Sultans
- Was also a Royal Residence
- At its peak it was home to as many as 4000 people

Hampton Court Palace, England

- Owned by King Henry VIII
- Built during the Tudor Period
- Contains a Court Maze

Blarney Castle, Ireland

- The castle dates before 1200
- The Stone of Eloquence AKA the Blarney Stone is built into the castle wall
- You have to hang upside down to kiss the stone

Cardiff Castle, Wales

- The original motte and bailey castle was built in the 11th century
- The castle was first used by the Romans
- Much of the castle and grounds were destroyed in WW2

Neuschwanstein, Germany

- Also known as Sleeping Beauty's Castle - as it served as inspiration for the movie version
- One of the most popular castles in Europe
- Was built for King Ludwig II - he was also called the Swan King and this motif is seen throughout the castle

  1. Wow, some of these are breathtakingly beautiful. I love those crazy trees from the castle from England! And the castle from Germany looks like something from a fairy tale. Awesome pictures.
